Why Is Autumn Perfect for Maternity Portraits?

I love autumn with it’s diverse colours and stunning golden hour lights. Maternity photography is my favourite genre and combining it with my favourite season is one of the best parts of my work.

Why would you wait?

Expecting a baby is such an important part of our lives! No matter the season, nothing should stop you from creating memories of your pregnancy. Many people tell me that they would like to do an outdoor pregnancy photo shoot, but they are worried that the weather might not cooperate. I always tell them that it can work perfectly fine. Even if it is autumn or winter, we can make it work.

The best time for maternity photography is sometime between week 25 and 33 of your pregnancy. This means that we have 8 weeks to find a day when the weather is nice outside. Even if the first appointment doesn’t work, we can always reschedule for another day.

Beautiful Lights and Colours

Sunlight is brighter in autumn and winter than in spring and summer. You might think it is uncomfortable many times – especially when driving – but in photography it is actually very exciting.

During golden hours – one hour before sunset and one hour after sunrise – the lights can be truly amazing. This is when we can capture stunning portraits, including all the diverse colours and lights of autumn. Here in Australia we can find locations with European trees that turn to gold and red in autumn, blooming rose gardens and trees with colourful flowers. There are so many places and looks to choose from! We also always have the beach as a choice that never disappoints.

What if it is raining?

We usually start our sessions in the studio with professional makeup and hair styling and studio portraits. After lunch break and rest for expecting moms, we meet at a previously discussed place approximately one hour before sunset. If we can’t go outside on the same day, we find another day for the location shoot only.

It has also happened before that we did the photos in the rain, with the help of a few umbrellas. It can actually look amazing and fun.

What if it’s cold?

Many of our maternity dresses are made of a warm material that can keep you comfortable, even if the weather is colder. The other option is to wear something underneath, like a thermal top or a bodysuit and tights. Boots can look really nice too with many of our dresses and will keep your feet warm. We also often use accessories like long wide shawls or knitted tops or cardigans. There is always a way to keep you warm and still make the images look great.

I’m also always open to new ideas and check out new places my clients recommend. Sometimes I even do the photos in their backyard.
