The Expecting Couple
I meet so many lovely people through my work. I wish I had the time to write about all my experiences, all my clients and their stories. This is one of them.
I met this gorgeous expecting couple when Giulia was 7 months pregnant with their first baby and they booked a maternity photoshoot with us. Both of them were so excited about becoming parents soon and it clearly shows on the images. There was also a very deep connection between them which was amazing to capture.
This session was a bit more special because we recorded their whole experience and put a video together about it. Please have a look at the video below.
Natural Light in the Studio
Our maternity sessions always start with relaxing professional makeup and hair styling. Our talented hair and makeup artist discusses with the mum-to-be what sort of style she prefers.
After Giulia’s makeup and hair was ready, we looked through the pregnancy gowns and accessories our studio has. Sge chose her favorite ones to wear and we also chose one of her own dresses she brought.
I usually start my maternity sessions at the large windows on the studio for silhouettes. I love photographing in the backlight, using sunlight only.
When taking pregnancy photos, with each setup I always capture a few images of the expecting mum only, then ask her partner/husband to join her in front of the camera. We repeat this with different poses, outfits, backgrounds and props.
The Great Outdoors
We have a beautiful garden behind and around the studio, with lots of flowers and greens. Unless the weather doesn’t cooperate on the day, we always go outside for pregnancy photos. We can look for stunning backgrounds at several points of the backyard with pink and white flowers, magnolias, lush green hedges and gold and red leaves in autumn. Sometimes we eve ngo to a nice location for maternity shots, like a beach, park or riverside. We had a beautiful day on Giulia’s and Tim’s maternity shoot and a perfect backdrop for outdoor portraits.
Photographic Backgrounds and Studio Lights
After coming back to the studio from the garden, we decided to use Giulia’s own green dress with the white seamless paper background. I enjoyed capturing her cheeky smile on the photos. For these images we used studio strobe lights.
To finish off the session, we used the dark grey background and Giulia chose our popular purple sleeveless maternity gown to go with it. We also used the silver and grey chaise lounge which looks amazin on photos.
It was such a pleasure to photograph these lovely expecting parents and capture memories for them about these special times. They came back to the studio a week later to view and select their images. After watching the cinematic presentation they decided to choose a wall art of three museum grade mounted fine art prints and a digital collection. Less than two weeks later I delivered everything for them to their door. I hope they will treasure these memories for many years to come. I can’t wait to meet them again, with theit little bundle of joy.
