The Project

We would like to capture a set of amazing glamour portraits that represent different times from the past century. We are looking for 21 women to participate in this exciting journey through history – 3 for each decades that inspired us. One of them is the 1960s. The rest are the 1920s, 1950s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and modern days from the year 2000 until today.

We will organize an exhibition with the best images from each session, in our studio and online. We can’t wait to see them together.

For more information about the project please visit our previous blog post where all the details are listed. In this post we will only focus on the 1960s style.

The 1960s

The 1960s were one of the most tumultuous and divisive decades in world history. It was marked by the civil right movements, the Vietnam War and antiwar protests, political assassinations and the emerging “generation gap”.

Fashion Trends

1960s fashion was bi-polar in just about every way. The early sixties were more reminiscent of the 1950s — conservative and restrained; certainly more classic in style and design.

The fashion of this time featured a number of diverse trends. It was a decade that broke many fashion traditions. Small groups of young people in urban centers received large media publicity and began to heavily influence elite designers.

Examples include the mini skirt, go-go boots, neon colors, mismatched patterns, pillbox hat and fake eyelashes.

For the first time in the 19th Century, London, not Paris, was the center of the fashion world. The British Invasion didn’t stop with The Beatles. It swept into all parts of life, especially clothing.

1960s style

Some of the greatest icons were Twiggy, Sophia Loren, Jackie Kennedy and Bridget Bardot.

Contemporary architecture and sculpture were the most prevalent inspirations for fashion designers in 1960. There were also hints of the twenties and thirties with bloused, bias-cut clothes, long straight overblouse and sashed tunics, short skirts, closely fitting hats and exaggerated makeup (especially red lips) and short hair.

Culottes, divided skirts and trim trouser skirts were introduced for travel, street wear and evenings at home. Bead and sequin embroidered evening clothes sparkled the night away. The long dress of sequins or crystal beads had replaced the bouffant dress.

Skirts got a little bit shorter in 1960. While worn with low-heeled shoes it placed more attention on the leg.

The hippie movement also exerted a strong influence on women’s clothing, including bell-bottom jeans, tie-dye and batik fabrics, as well as paisley prints.
