“I think we all know boldness when we see it. Nothing makes me smile more than when I see someone being fully themselves, with their own individual style and character, whatever that is.”

Angelina Jolie

The Reasons Why

I love modern history, classic movies, glamorous celebrities and the way how fashion and style evolved throughout different times. It is also interesting to see how much beauty standards changed during the last 100 years. And I absolutely love glamour photography!

glamour

Our incredibly talented hair and makeup artist is passionate about her work and replicating looks from special times in the 20th century and up to these days. She has come up with some really great ideas and is one of the brains behind this glamour project.

Valeria has been busy at home while in lockdown, doing makeup and hair for herself according to our chosen decades. She also took the photos of herself, in her home, using one of my professional cameras. She has done such an amazing job, following my remote guidance in portrait photography.

The Project

I would like to capture a set of stunning glamour portraits that represent different times from the past century. We are looking for 21 women to participate in this exciting journey through history. The decades that inspired us are the 1920s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and modern days from the year 2000 until today.

Our plan is to choose 3 women for each of these 7 eras. Ladies of all ages and body types are welcome to participate! We love mother and daughter portraits so we welcome girls with their mums too! It would be great to have women of different ages for each decade’s portraits. It doesn’t matter if you are in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s or beyond, we would love to hear from you. We are even open to the idea of including couple’s and family portraits in this project.

Inspirational Times

The 1920s

This is the decade in which fashion entered the modern era. These were the times when women first abandoned the more restricting fashions of past years.

1920s

From the ultra-glam flapper girls to the first waves of cool androgyny, 1920s fashion was all about liberation, trying new things and having a whole lot of fun in the process. Corsets came off, skirts got shorter, and thanks to Coco Chanel, trousers for women were in for the very first time.

Among the most famous celebrities were Louise Brooks, Anna May Wong, Gloria Swanson and Josephine Baker.

This vintage style is one of my personal favorites. Please read more about the time, style, fashion and trends in the 20s in another post, by clicking the button below.

The 1950s

It was a decade marked by the post-World War II boom and the dawn of the Cold War. Countries all over the world were still trying to recover from the war, with new conflicts rising here and there.

Amongst the hottest female celebrities were Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe. Women used winged eyeliner and red lipstick, pin curls, bandanas and poodle looks. In their clothing: pencil and poodle skirts, polka dots, sweaters and cardigans, tight fitting skirts, colorful socks, hot pants, bustiers and bikinis. Rockabilly and greaser fashion like in the movie Grease, tight and high waisted jeans and leather jackets.

The 1960s

The 1960s were one of the most tumultuous and divisive decades in world history.

The fashion of this time featured a number of diverse trends. It was a decade that broke many fashion traditions. Small groups of young people in urban centers received large media publicity and began to heavily influence elite designers. Examples include the mini skirt, go-go boots, neon colors, mismatched patterns, pillbox hat and fake eyelashes.

Some of the greatest icons were Twiggy, Bridget Bardot, Jackie Kennedy and Sophia Loren.

The hippie movement also exerted a strong influence on women’s clothing, including bell-bottom jeans, tie-dye and batik fabrics, as well as paisley prints.

The 1970s

The decade of the 1970s was in many ways a continuation of the late 1960s with respect to social trends.

Some of the most famous stars were Cher, Debbie Harry, Barbara Straisand and the ABBA.

The 60s fashion style was still in effect, with rebellious hippies and unconventional mods. Short skirts paired with long coats and long skirts with short west. Colors and flowers for hippies, sport jackets, glittering, sparkling and high waisted pants and high heels for disco style.

In makeup trends, natural look for bohemian hippies, shimmery cheeks, orange lips and blue/green eyeshadow for disco night.

Is this your favorite decade? Read more about it the “Portraits from the 1970s” Post.

The 1980s

Another one of my favorites. I have very fond memories from these times.

In terms of fashion and music, the 80s was all about excess: greed was good, hair was big and colors were bright. Free-to-air-television and VHS tapes were all we had to watch on TV. Charles and Diana were a dream couple, and pictures of Michael Hutchence and Kylie Minogue adorned kid’s bedrooms across Australia.

1980s

Other pop and movie icons were Madonna, Whitney Houston, Demi Moore, Grace Jones, Prince, Cindy Lauper, Michael Jackson, Wham and many more.

Makeup trends: strong colorful eyeshadow (pink or purple) glitter bronzer and bold lips.

In hair styling: big volume, bold curls, waves and partial pony tail.

And that unforgettable fashion: shoulder pads, high waisted, acid and whitewashed jeans, colorful leggings and jeans, ripped tights, denim and biker jackets, oversized blazers, Converse, Ray Ban, Ralph Lauren, big earrings, coveralls and jumpsuits.

The 1990s

This decade I remember clearly. Movements such as grunge, the rave scene, and hip hop spread around the world as well as the then-new technology such as cable television and the World Wide Web.

Some of the celebrities who defined the style were the stars of the “Friends” TV series, the Spice Girls, Kate Moss, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Princess Diana, Sara Jessica Parker, Alicia Silverstone, Gwen Stefani and Janet Jackson.

Starting in the mid-90s, industrial and military styles crept into mainstream fashion. By the late 90s rave culture swept through and people were looking for clothes that were more glamourous again.

Early 2000s to Modern Days

Technology had a huge impact on fashion in the early 2000s. The color palette was filled with shiny black tones and reflective metallics. Popular outfits for women included mesh or handkerchief tops, box-pleated or leather skirts, shiny pants and sparkly shoes. Casual clothing and leisurewear were the other big trends. Denim became a staple for men and women.

Many clothing trends were born out of globalization, the rise of fast fashion and celebrities’ growing influence as style icons. Think Gossip Girl, Lady Gaga, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lopez, Eva Mendez, Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Rachel Bilson, Angelina Jolie, Katy Perry, Naomi Watts, Rihanna, Paris Hilton, Beyoncé Knowles and many, many more.
