Portraits from the 1920s

As part of our “Portraits of Glamorous Decades” Photography Project, we are looking for 3 women for 1920s celebrity style shoots.

The Project

We would like to capture a set of amazing glamour portraits that represent different times from the past century. We are looking for 21 women to participate in this exciting journey through history – 3 for each decades that inspired us. One of them is the 1920s. The rest are the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and modern days from the year 2000 until today.

The best portraits from each session will be exhibited in our studio and online. We can’t wait to see them together.

1920s Style

Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.

In North America people often refer to the 20s as the “Roaring Twenties” or the “Jazz Age”. The movie Great Gatsby (originally a book) is a great example of these times.

In Europe the period was the “Golden Age” because of the economic boom after World War I.

This is the decade in which fashion entered the modern era. These were the times when women first abandoned the more restricting fashions of past years.

Fashion

From the ultra-glam flapper girls to the first waves of cool androgyny, 1920s fashion was all about liberation, trying new things and having a whole lot of fun in the process. Corsets came off, skirts got shorter, and thanks to Coco Chanel, trousers for women were in for the very first time.

No longer were women willing to trade their mobility for the old stodgy customs of the Victorian era. Old-fashioned torture devices like the corset and the crinoline no longer served a purpose for young women who wanted to dance, go to work, hop into cars, and walk around town.

Nightclubs became the mythical venue for men and women to get dressed up, take their automobile, and go out drinking and listen to the new sounds of jazz music. This 1920s nightlife scene has remained a staple of hip young people ever since.

Among the most famous celebrities were Louise Brooks, Anna May Wong, Gloria Swanson and Josephine Baker.

Makeup

Popular Jazz Age Makeup Trends:

Lipstick. Throughout most of the 1920s, dark red lipsticks were all the rage. Many women used lip color to make their mouth look smaller and rounder.

Eye Shadow. Just like today, women loved creating a mysterious smoky eye with the help of black or dark brown eye shadows.

Mascara. Because dramatic eyes were all the rage, it makes sense that mascara was a staple in every flapper’s makeup bag.

Rouge. We call it “blush” today, but in the 1920s the product used to deepen or darken the cheeks was called “rouge.”

The studio has a wardrobe full of gorgeous gowns, dresses and accessories, in 1920s vintage style too.
