We are looking for 21 women to participate in this exciting journey through history – 3 for each decades that inspired us. One of them is the 1970s. The rest are the 1920s, 1950s, 1960s, 1980s, 1990s and modern days from the year 2000 until today.
We will organize an exhibition with the best images from each session, in our studio and online. We can’t wait to see them together.
For more information about the project please visit our previous blog post where all the details are listed. In this post we will only focus on the 1970s style.

The 1970s
The decade of the 1970s was in many ways a continuation of the late 1960s with respect to social trends. Activist crusaded for social justice, gaining new freedoms for women, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, homosexuals, the elderly, and other ethnic and minority groups.
Some of the most famous stars were Cher, Debbie Harry, Barbara Streisand, Liza Minelli and the ABBA.
Fashion and Makeup Trends
The 60s fashion style was still in effect, with rebellious hippies and unconventional mods. Short skirts paired with long coats and long skirts with short wests. Colors and flowers for hippies, sport jackets, glittering, sparkling and high waisted pants and high heels for disco style.
In makeup trends, natural look for bohemian hippies, shimmery cheeks, orange lips and blue/green eyeshadow for disco night.
Polyester was the material of choice and bright colors were everywhere. Both men and women wore very tight fitted pants. By 1973, most women were wearing high cut boots and low cut pants. This was the first full decade in which women could be seen wearing pants in every walk of life.
One of the most successful designers was Halston. His clothes, whisked up by such fashion leaders as Liza Minnelli and Jackie O, were elegant versions of established American classics – shirtwaist dresses, cashmere pullovers and cardigans, wrapped jackets and pants.
Some experts claimed New York City, rather than Paris, was the fashion capital of the world.
The key to fashion in 1973 was the knitting needle, as the sweater became the popular look on both sides of the ocean. There were sweater coats, sweater dresses and even sweater suits. The jumpsuit was also a huge success in 1975.
By 1979, people were tired of the casual look and had gotten back into business wear. With an increased emphasis on formality, blazers and pants skirts became much more easily mixed and matched.
Is this your favorite decade? Reach out to us if you would like to have your portraits taken in this style.
