We are looking for 21 women to participate in this exciting journey through history – 3 for each decades that inspired us. One of them is the 1980s. The rest are the 1920s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1990s and modern days from the year 2000 until today.

We will organize an exhibition with the best images from each session, in our studio and online. We can’t wait to see them together.

For more information about the project please visit our previous blog post where all the details are listed. In this post we will only focus on the 1980s style.

The 1980s

I have very fond memories from these times.

The decade saw major socioeconomic changes due to advances in technology and a worldwide move away from planned economies and towards laissez-faire capitalism.

In terms of fashion and music, the 80s was all about excess: greed was good, hair was big and colors were bright. Free-to-air-television and VHS tapes were all we had to watch on TV. Charles and Diana were a dream couple, and pictures of Michael Hutchence and Kylie Minogue adorned kid’s bedrooms across Australia.

Other pop and movie icons were Madonna, Whitney Houston, Demi Moore, Grace Jones, Cindy Lauper, Michael Jackson, Wham and many more.

Makeup and Fashion Trends

The 1980s was possibly the boldest decade in modern fashion history, a magical era of over-the-top silhouettes and saturated colors. They were the years of puffed shoulders and power suits, flashy skirts and spandex leggings, velour, leg warmers and voluminous parachute pants.

Political fashion was also part of the landscape. Then there were yuppies, an acronym for “young urban professionals,” who championed showy materialism, in the form of designer labels, gold watches, swanky New York City penthouses and BMWs. The entertainment world reflected the upwardly-mobile nouveaux riches in movies like Oliver Stone’s “Wall Street”.

Makeup: strong colorful eyeshadow (pink or purple) glitter bronzer and bold lips.

Hair style: big volume, bold curls, waves and partial pony tail.

And that unforgettable fashion: shoulder pads, high waisted, acid and whitewashed jeans, colorful leggings and jeans, ripped tights, denim and biker jackets, oversized blazers, labels like Converse, Ray Ban and Ralph Lauren, coveralls and jumpsuits. Brightly-colored, chunky accessories like plastic hoop earrings, rubber bracelets and shiny chain necklaces were a necessity.
